IVF treatment
What is IVF (in vitro fertilisation) and when is it used?
Medically reviewed by: Prof. Dr. Mehmet Çınar — Obstetrics & Gynecology, IVF and Reproductive Medicine SpecialistLast updated:
Short answer
IVF is a treatment in which an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the body, in the laboratory, and the resulting embryo is then placed into the uterus. It is offered when the fallopian tubes are blocked, in significant male factor infertility, in ovulation disorders, in endometriosis, or when simpler steps such as intrauterine insemination have not resulted in pregnancy.
