Stages of IVF Treatment
The in vitro fertilization (IVF) process consists of delicate stages such as ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer.
What is IVF?
IVF treatment is one of the leading assisted reproductive methods applied for couples who cannot conceive using standard methods. The treatment process basically consists of 5 stages.
1. Ovarian Stimulation
Hormone medications are used to stimulate the mother-to-be's ovaries. The aim of this process is to obtain multiple high-quality eggs. The process is monitored by ultrasound.
2. Egg Retrieval (OPU)
When the eggs reach sufficient maturity, they are retrieved vaginally under mild sedation. The procedure takes an average of 15-20 minutes.
3. Sperm Collection and Fertilization
The sperm sample taken from the male is brought together with the collected eggs in the laboratory (Classic IVF or ICSI method).
4. Embryo Development and Transfer
The resulting embryos are followed in the laboratory for 3 to 5 days. The healthiest embryo is selected and transferred to the uterus.
5. Pregnancy Test
About 12 days after embryo transfer, pregnancy is checked by a Beta-hCG test in the blood.
