What Is the Embryo Accumulation (Batching) Method, and Who Is It For?
The batching method is a strategy that increases the chance of transfer in patients who produce few eggs, by performing multiple IVF retrievals and accumulating embryos. I explain who it is suitable for, how it is applied, and its advantages.
Dear patients, a frequently asked question among my patients with diminished ovarian reserve is: "If few eggs come out at a time, what will our chance be?" This is exactly where one of the strategies that comes into play is the batching method, that is, embryo accumulation. In this article I explain what the batching method is, who it is applied to, and why it works.
What Is the Batching Method?
The batching method (in medicine, "embryo accumulation") is applied to patients in whom few embryos are obtained in a single egg retrieval. Multiple retrieval cycles are performed, the embryos obtained in each cycle are frozen and accumulated, and when a sufficient number is reached, the best embryo(s) are transferred. Thus, a chance that is "few at a time" turns into an "accumulated, collective" chance.
Who Is It For?
- Patients with diminished ovarian reserve (low AMH) who obtain few embryos in each retrieval
- Those with a limited number of eggs due to advanced age
- Couples who could not obtain enough/good embryos to transfer in previous attempts
- Situations where genetic testing (PGT) is planned and enough embryos are needed

Why Does It Work?
In a patient with low reserve, perhaps 1-2 embryos are obtained in a single retrieval; this limits the chance in a single transfer. With embryos accumulated over several cycles, there are more and selectable embryos on hand before transfer. This can provide a meaningful advantage, especially in low reserve where every egg is valuable.
Does Freezing Harm the Embryo?
With the fast-freezing (vitrification) techniques used today, embryos retain their viability at a high rate. Therefore, freezing and storing during the accumulation process is a safe and common part of modern IVF practice. I explained the general advantages of frozen embryo transfer in the FET article.

The batching method is a strategy that increases the chance, not a guarantee. How many cycles will be needed and what the outcome will be depends on age, reserve, and the quality of the embryos obtained. My aim is to make the most efficient use of the limited resource we have.
